6:28 am - In Country!
|
Well, there is not much to say and minus the OPSEC piece and there really is nothing to say. I will say that I'm currently at a FOB in Afghanistan. It is a NATO FOB run by Canadians. We don't really have a mission yet. We should be pushing out as soon as we have our equipment and vehicles. All that stuff is still being sorted out. We are limited on Fire Support assets right now too. Hopefully, that will improve.
We went to the bazaar this past Saturday. It was really neat. All the vendors trying to get us to buy everything. Most of it was fake or stolen but... *shrug* I want to buy one of the rugs so I stopped in a few stalls and asked what the price was on one of the small ones. The man said $70. I asked why so much and he told me it was silk. I told him I didn't want it now and walked out. I went into a different stall where one of my Sergeants was bartering about a wool rug. I asked how much the big silk rug was and the man said $800. I told him I would only pay $400 but I didn't have the money so I couldn't pay this week. He asked me how much I did have and I told him $100 (which I didn't have either) and he said it was to low. I turned and walked away and he yelled that $100 now would be OK. I could have gotten a hand-made silk rug for $100!!!
The weather here is hot and dusty. It gets about 130 degrees during the day. But worse than the heat is the dust. It's a fine gray powder that gets on and in everything. It chokes the air. I know my lungs are filled with it now. Bleh!

9:24 am - Down to the wire
|
So, I graduated JFO. To easy. We had a Pakistani delegation come on Thursday and I was grabbed to do a SIM while they watched. It was fun but I was nervous and made a bunch of mistakes. I got back to Copperas Cove on Friday night about 8:30PM. The weekend was nice and relaxing.
Now it's Monday morning and the people who are coming to pack up my house should be here soon. My list of things I have to get done this week is huge. I think I will be OK though. Plus, Jamie will be here on Friday. :-) SSG Whinnery's mother-in-law is throwing the FISTers a big party in Austin on Saturday.

7:32 pm - Joint Fires Observer Course
|
This last week I started the two week Joint Fires Observer(JFO) Course. The main focus of the course is Close Air Support(CAS) but includes Artillery, Naval Gunfire, Army Attack Aviation, and AC-130 support as well. Most of the days are spent with mornings in a classroom and the afternoon in the simulator. You have to complete 7sims to pass. So far I have rocked my 3sims. The only problem with the course so far is that it's at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. I thought I was done with this place until I had to come back for Captain's Career Course! No, 4months after FAOBC I'm back here! The weather changes from hot and muggy to windy and tornadoes in seconds flat. I can't wait to get back to Texas. Soon we will be departing for the Mid-East. OK, back to being lazy.

1:25 pm - Upcoming Afghanistan Deployment
|
For those of you who haven't heard, I will be deploying to Afghanistan early this summer. As of right now, my unit does not know what our mission or location will be. We have some rumors of what we might be doing but no concrete mission or locations have been passed down.
Due to Operational Security(OPSEC) I will not divulge which unit I am in exactly or our location at any time of our deployment. If details are released from other sources I will link or quote what I can. I will call my Company simply Comanche.
If you want more information before I deploy contact me via Facebook, cellphone, or AIM.
One final note: I know that internet access will be limited at best. I may only be able to update this journal once or twice a month. Please check back for fun and exciting news
